Billups for Iverson: Are the Pistons are about to go mental?!

If Stephen A. Smith is right, the Detroit Pistons are about to wreck their once championship level team, in one of the worst trades I have ever heard of.

Smith is reporting that the Pistons are about to trade elite level point guard Chauncey Billups, a win producer extraordinaire, AND their second best win producer, Antonio Mcdyess, for the fading (but decent) Allen Iverson.

If this is true, the Pistons are making a major mistake.

Please focus on the "Wins over Average". That's my equivalent to baseball's "Total Player Wins". By that standard, while Iverson had an outstanding last season, Billups and McDyess outpaced him... and if I were to go back in time, Iverson unleashed... as he was in Philadelphia, tends to be a very inefficient offensive player.

And Billups and Mcdyess are win machines. I know I'm repeating myself, but I'm just flabbergasted by this move.

But I suppose as a Bucks fan I should be elated. It looks like we may have stole from the Pistons the brains of their operation. Because this move makes ZERO sense.

I'm glad the Pistons are stupid.

Them getting worse only makes it easier for the Bucks to make the playoffs. ;]

They get cap space for next year and the year after that. That is why this move was made. So much cap space that they are in the LeBron sweep stakes now (or Mello or Dwyade or Bosh) Also it will sell a shitload of Pistons jerseys. Plus it wasn't like the Pistons were going to win a championship this year with that same team coming back might as well set yourself up for the future and make some money while your at it.

I totally agree with Greg on this.
We all know that this Pistons core wasn't gonna be enough to go all the way. Rasheed is 34 and Billups is 32.
They just gave Billups that extension last summer and he's due money long into his declining years.
Sure they get worse this season (even though Dumars won't publicly admit it i'm sure that he's aware of it).
Rasheed's 13 million (or so) goes of the books after this season, and so do Iverson's 22. Naturally they're not gonna give 'Sheed an extension at that salary. so he either goes, or gets a major paycut and stays on to play a diff role.
Stuckey gets promoted to PG next season (for the time being).Amir Johnson and Maxiel take dice's mins. and next season the pistons have 35m in cap room!. So sure, they get knocked out in the 1st or 2nd round this season instead of the conf. finals, who cares?
They still have Rip (30) for a few good seasons in him, Prince is in his prime, and as for Aflalo, Stuckey, Maxiel and Johnson they evaluate who's for real and who's just a role player. and then.... Kaboom. Either they get someboday next summer or they wait and have a front row seat at 2010.
Bosh, Lebron, Wade and co. with the 37 they can get one of those and still have 15-16m or so to sign another star player.
If stuckey turns out to be all that, fine, if not... they snag a PG and a Center.
How's that a dumb move? what better prospects did the franchise have?
BTW this is a nice move for the Nuggets as well imo, but that's a subject of a diff post.
Have a nice day y'all.
